Kintsugi Health My Health Toolbox: Metabolic Reset Programme

Metabolic Reset Programme

Have you been diagnosed with high blood sugar or abnormal cholesterol levels? Do you have high blood pressure? Are you overweight or struggling with hormonal issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome?

In mainstream medicine these conditions are treated as separate entities with condition-specific treatment protocols, but did you know that they share the same root cause and drivers? They are all lifestyle conditions caused by metabolic imbalances.

The Metabolic Reset Programme takes a functional medicine approach to the prevention and management of these conditions. We look upstream to identify the drivers of metabolic imbalance. We then help you take back control of your health by addressing these drivers, and giving you all the knowledge and tools you need to optimise your lifestyle and turn your health around.

How does the programme work?

  • You will be asked to complete a comprehensive medical and lifestyle questionnaire
  • You will receive a referral for a comprehensive health screen (Medicare covered)
  • You will be offered optional functional testing (out of pocket, cost not included in programme fee) to help us identify your unique triggers and drivers
      • Gut microbiome mapping
      • Organic acid testing
  • As part of your treatment plan, you will receive a completed timeline and functional medicine matrix depicting the interconnectivity between your symptoms and the 8 functional nodes
  • After your initial 60-minute session with a GP, and once we have received the results of your health screen, you will receive a preliminary management plan to get you going.
  • This plan will be reviewed and adjusted after your first 30-min GP review session, and once we have received the results of your functional tests.
  • Some participants may meet the criteria for medicinal cannabis as a plant-based pain relieving medicine. Sessions for this can be added to the programme.

The programme is implemented in three phases:

I. Setting the stage – preparation

While we gather as much information as we can, your responsibilities start with implementing a 4- week detox/ elimination diet to reset your gut and your immune system, and to identify any specific food triggers. You will have access to a 4-week meal plan to help you navigate your way through the elimination diet. Premium participants will have access to our food coach for more strategies and tips.

Having a mindset that works with us, rather than against us is essential if we want to make lasting changes. Standard programme participants are given access to the Resilience 101 educational module. Premium participants have 3 sessions with our clinical psychologist, in addition to the educational module,  to help you master your mindset, and learn how to  manage stress constructively.

II. Making it happen – implementing your plan

This is where the adventure starts, and you get to implement your own management plan, which includes lifestyle interventions as well as a therapeutic food plan.  Premium participants will have ongoing input from our food coach.

You will also receive access to the Lifestyle Foundations educational modules

III. Making it last – maintenance beyond the programme

We work with you to review progress, troubleshoot and tweak your plan to make sure that what you’ve learned can be incorporated into your lifestyle for life-long health and wellbeing.

We provide you with the knowledge and tools you need to not only implement your plan, but to incorporate it into your lifestyle:

  • Weekly meal plans
  • Food coach support
  • Psychological support (mindset, stress management strategies)
  • Small group support
  • Weekly webinars
  • Education

What is metabolic health?

Metabolism refers to all the processes involved in converting food energy into cellular energy. Essentially, it starts with our choice of foods we eat, and includes gut health, digestion, nutrient absorption, glucose and fat metabolism.

Every cell in our body requires energy to perform a multitude of functions that keep us alive. A metabolically healthy person consumes the right amounts of the right types of food energy, is able to efficiently convert this food energy into ATP, the energy currency cells require, is able to store the right amount of energy in the right places, and is able to efficiently use this energy as and when required.

Metabolic health refers to optimal insulin sensitivity, a healthy gut and normal glucose and fat metabolism.

Insulin sensitivity

Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, is the master regulator of metabolism and energy storage. It plays a key role in both glucose and fat metabolism. In a metabolically healthy body, cells are exquisitely sensitive to insulin, and blood sugar levels are restored to normal soon after a meal. However, genetic variations, energy-dense-nutrient-poor diets, the over-availability of high-carb snacks, poor gut health, inflammation, inactivity, chronic stress, and poor sleep can all contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is one of the most important root causes of chronic lifestyle illnesses.

Carbohydrate metabolism

Glucose is the body’s preferred source of energy. It is available for immediate use as an energy source by every cell in the body. A healthy metabolism requires a healthy balance between glucose availability and glucose consumption, as well as optimal insulin levels and responsive cells. Fructose is another important player in metabolic health, It is converted to fat and stored away for leaner times. The problem is that there are far more feasts than famines these days, and our fat stores have limited capacity, resulting in metabolic imbalance and disease.

Gut health

A healthy gut is foundational to metabolic health. It is essential for digestion and absorption of nutrients. It is the gatekeeper between us and the environment, controlling what enters and what stays outside. Our gut microbes live in a close symbiotic relationship with us, communicating with our cells and keeping the immune system and metabolism in balance. An imbalanced microbiome contributes to weight gain, to heart disease, to high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels. It is also one of the most important drivers of inflammation.

Fat metabolism

Dietary fats are digested and absorbed from the gut with the help of bile salts and digestive enzymes. They are predominantly taken to fat cells for storage, unless you are on a ketogenic diet. Excess glucose and fructose are also converted to fat and stored in the liver (fatty liver) and fat cells. Insulin blocks fat burning and promotes fat storage in the liver and fat cells. In other words, the higher your glucose level after a meal, the higher your insulin level, the more fat will be stored and the more difficult it will be to burn fat and lose weight.
